A TR2 in Pieces - Part Three "JUNE
2010"
It's been a long time since we have made any progress on the TR.
Two house moves for me and an emigration for Mum and Dad, plus other
projects have meant that progress on our part has been slow, well
actually nonexistent.
The body however has progressed significantly in the hands of Alan
Place in Cumbria. Alan, an ex SDG committee member runs a workshop
specialising in classic sports cars near Penrith and has now fully
restored the bodyshell and mounted it to the chassis, complete with
paint it is now ready to start receiving mechanicals, electrics
and trim.

Being that when we decided on a strip down the car had been standing
for the best part of 15 years and has now been in "restoration"
for a further 10 we were unsure of what we might find upon disassembling
the engine. After a lengthy extrication process by which we had
to move a container load of spare parts and an Austin 7 chassis
(thanks to Paul and Heather for their invaluable help!) we finally
had the engine and gearbox assembly ready to come apart.
I parted the engine and 'box and got the engine up onto a stand.
Over the course of a couple of hours I stripped it down to see what
we had left to work with. It was still nice and free to revolve
and all the fixings came undone easily.

There is nothing too disastrous to report with the internals but
it did have three broken compression rings, a snapped timing chain
tensioner and a very baggy small end bush on No 1 cylinder. Must
have made for some interesting noises when it was last running!!
As for the rebuild it will consist of new pistons and liners, a
full dynamically balanced bottom end assembly and a cylinder head
overhaul to include new valve guides, hardened seats and stainless
valves.
Whilst I have been up to my ears in grotty old oil Rachel has been
stripping the interior panels and trims as well as taking the old
facings and stuffing from the seats etc. She has prepped everything
ready to accept the new trim material, when we find some.
We have been looking into sourcing some of the original Geranium
coloured trim for the interior facings, cappings and carpets. We
recalled from the restoration of TS2 (also Pearle White with Geranium
trim) that the material is extremely hard to come by, in fact more
or less impossible, we are now looking into the options.
Oh, and the reason for all of this sudden progress.... The car
is due to be on display at the new event on the Goodwood estate's
calendar,
"Vintage" from 13th - 15th August. A
celebration of all things British from the 40's to the 80's.
We now have 8 weeks, wish us luck!!!!
